Buying a Used CarBefore you start shopping for a car, you'll need to do some homework. Spending time now may save you serious money later. Think about your driving habits, your needs, and your budget. You can learn about car models, options, and prices by reading newspaper ads, both display and classified. There is a wealth of information about used cars on the Internet: enter "used car" as the key words and you'll find additional information on how to buy a used car, detailed instructions for conducting a pre-purchase inspection, and ads for cars available for sale, among other information.Libraries and book stores also have publications that compare car models, options, and costs, and offer information about frequency of repair records, safety tests, and mileage. Many of these publications have details on the do's and don'ts of buying a used car. When you buy a used car from a dealer, get the original Buyers Guide that was posted in the vehicle, or a copy. The Guide must reflect any negotiated changes in warranty coverage. It also becomes part of your sales contract and overrides any contrary provisions. For example, if the Buyers Guide says the car comes with a warranty and the contract says the car is sold "as is," the dealer must give you the warranty described in the Guide |

What to know when buying a private used carLooking through the classified ads, you see someone is selling the perfect car. The price is a lot lower than one at a dealer, and it's even the right color. Some of the most common questions about used cars include the following: I signed a contract to buy a used car, but changed my mind. What do I do ?Many consumers think the three-day right-to-cancel applies to this problem. However, the right-to-cancel doesn't apply to most car sales. The sale must take place away from the seller's regular place of business. The only time this rule might apply is if the car was bought from a dealer at a tent or warehouse sale that didn't take place at its usual place of business. The car I bought just days ago won't run anymore. I was told the car was next to new and had just been checked out by a mechanic. Is there any way for me to get my money back ?If you have unreasonable problems with a car you bought from a private seller, you may have to settle differences in small claims court or seek the services of a private attorney. Keep copies of contracts, receipts, bills, canceled checks, any document that will support your case if a problem arises |
